# PackageKit/Gnome Software

PackageKit is the backend software which allows desktop users to install software using the Gnome Software tool.
|
|
It also has an automatic software update feature, but for this functionality we suggest to use [dnf automatic](package_updates).
|
|
|
|
Except on workstationi-type systems this is disabled.
|
|
|
|
It can be explicitly be disabled with
|
|

desktop::enable_packagekit: false
|
|
```

or enabled with
|
|

|
desktop::enable_packagekit: true
|
|
