UOM Minutes Here the minutes of all UOMs are kept main.html

22/10/2025

... Next Meeting

24/09/2025

  1. Introduction

    • Approval of last minutes * All those present confirm the minutes of the last meeting.

    • Communication

  2. Agenda

    • Machine Status

      • Limited performance due to high losses and bad lifetime from increased vacuum pressure after X02/U15 and X11/UE36 installation
        • Small aperture, 21 mm, 2m long copper vacuum chamber upstream of X11/UE36 was removed and replaced with 40 mm chamber with additional pumping intersection
        • Machine performance from loss / lifetime perspective now acceptable
        • Beam size remains increased by factor ~2
        • For more infos, see last meeting on the topic: https://indico.psi.ch/event/18038/
    • Operation Schedule

      • Operation until October shutdown without further interventions following DUO schedule https://duo.psi.ch/duo/public_calendar.php
        • Machine development / scrubbing until 13:00 today
        • First light for SIM today from 13-17:00
        • First light for I-TOMCAT tomorrow and Friday from 8-17:00
        • Beamline development from today until October shutdown
        • Machine development next Tuesday and Tuesday until Friday morning the week after
    • Beamline Panels

      • Please add the beamline operation info panels to your launcher and have it open on your console
        • e.g., caqtdm -macro Beamline=X01DD /sls/op/config/qt/X_Info_Panel.ui
        • control of beamline and view of machine/total orbit bump for your sourcepoint
        • control/view of your absorber/shutter (bend) or gap/shutter (ID)
        • small accelerator status overview
        • operator messages
        • easy access to related panels
        • feedback welcome
      • The beamline orbit bump must only be changed in steps of 1 um or urad per second or slower
        • other wise the fast orbit feedback might fail
        • we need to gather some experience with user controlled bumps - it could be that additional machine protection measures have to be taken to ensure stable operation
    • Top-Up Schemes

      • TOMCAT: shorter periodicity preferred, option 2 not required, scan duration anyhow longer than top-up periodicity and lost frames acceptable, depends heavily on how transparent the injection can be made
      • Debye: we see a signature of the injection (and pre-injection) on our data. Shorter periodicity would be rather detrimental. With the present injection scheme, Debye would be more wanting to push towards much less frequent top-up
    • Beamline Phones

    • Console issue today

      • a significant fraction of the consoles in the control room spontaneously rebooted this morning around 6 thus stopping any local feedback loops and destroying any locally recorded data
      • the same is observed on many beamline consoles
  3. Requests

    • X11MA / SIM: 400 mA for first light starting at 13:00 on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025
    • X02SA / I-TOMCAT: 60 mA for first light starting at 8:00 on Thursday, September 25th, 2025
    • X04SA / ADDAMS: aligning undulator is desired --> possibly Wed. 1st October until 3 PM

    • Communication

  2. Agenda

    • Machine Status

      • Limited performance due to high losses and bad lifetime
        • Removal of newly installed UE36 in X11 not yet decided, next decision meeting Wednesday, 17.09.2025
        • Ongoing investigations and planning: https://indico.psi.ch/event/18002/
      • Operation until then
        • Machine development today until evening
        • Beamline development from today evening until Monday morning
        • Machine development Monday
        • Beamline development from Tuesday morning (Powder Diffraction School measurements Tuesday/Wednesday)
        • Maybe Shutdown beginning Wednesday evening
    • Alignment

      • Detailed overview: download
      • Main takes:
        • No actions necessary on beamline side before October shutdown (multiple machine alignment tasks ongoing)
        • Final machine alignment only achieved after phase 2 shutdown
          • Larger orbit bumps can be provided until completion of phase 2, i.e., ~summer 2026 (by then beamlines should be aligned to the machine)
          • Further alignments may become necessary (e.g., due to settlements or incidents)
        • For smaller orbit bumps we will provide a tool for the beamlines after the October shutdown
    • Beamline Panels

      • Please add the beamline operation info panels to your launcher and have it open on your console
        • e.g., caqtdm -macro Beamline=X01DD /sls/op/config/qt/X_Info_Panel.ui
        • control of beamline and view of machine/total orbit bump for your sourcepoint
        • control/view of your absorber/shutter (bend) or gap/shutter (ID)
        • small accelerator status overview
        • operator messages
        • easy access to related panels
        • feedback welcome
      • The beamline orbit bump must only be changed in steps of 1 um or urad per second or slower
        • other wise the fast orbit feedback might fail
        • we need to gather some experience with user controlled bumps - it could be that additional machine protection measures have to be taken to ensure stable operation
    • Top-Up Schemes

      1. Lower and upper beam current thresholds defining top-up (e.g., adjusted for on average 3 min top-up periodicity)
        • top-up starting time defined by lifetime and current thresholds
        • top-up duration defined by injection efficiency and current thresholds
        • advantages: stable average beam current, stable average top-up duration
        • disadvantages: gating beamline measurement requires external trigger, i.e., EPICS or timing Event
      2. Fixed periodicity (e.g., 3 minutes) and upper beam current threshold defining top-up
        • top-up starting time predefined by desired periodicity
        • top-up duration defined by injection efficiency, current thresholds and lifetime
        • advantages: gating beamline measurement with local timer possible, i.e., time until next top-up fixed and known (useful for uninterruptible scanning measurements)
        • disadvantages: in rare cases significant fluctuations of beam current and top-up duration possible
      3. Bunch charge thresholds defining top-up
        • top-up starting time defined by lifetime and current thresholds of all individual bunches
        • top-up duration is 1 shot, i.e., 1/3 s
        • advantages: most stable average current
        • disadvantages: same as 1. and many individual top-ups (fine if transparent injection can be achieved)
      • Main Questions
        • preferred periodicity, i.e., how many minutes?
        • preferred top-up scheme?
        • comment: current change implies motion of sourcepoint (0.3 um/mA in both planes) giving stronger motivation for option 1
        • TOMCAT: shorter periodicity preferred, option 2 not required, scan duration anyhow longer than top-up periodicity and lost frames acceptable, depends heavily on how transparent the injection can be made
  3. Requests
