UOM Minutes Here the minutes of all UOMs are kept main.html

02/06/2026

  1. Introduction

    • Communication
      • The current machine schedule is available at https://sls.psi.ch/schedule/.
      • Machine development shifts with increased sensitivity to vibrations are marked with red text "(No Vibration)"
      • Please send shift requests ahead of the UOM meetings.
  2. Reports

    • Operation

      • Vacuum scrubbing since shutdown with installation of elliptical undulator UE38 in X07M
        • good start with fast ramp up to 400 mA with acceptable lossratio
        • accumulating beam dose fast, i.e., 77 Ah accumulated since shutdown
        • lifetime unfortunately not improving since last week, i.e., stuck at 7 hours
        • beam size unfortunately also not improving since last week, i.e.,
          • horizontal: 11 μm
          • vertical: 27 μm
        • Scrubbing with closed IDs starting this weekend

      plots from scrubbing

      • ID measurements
        • Feed Forward tables for second UE36_1 and UE38 measured
        • FF tables implemented in epics
        • Perturbation from UE36_1 found to be larger than previously installed UE36_2 potentially due to measurements happening before alignment
    • Beamline Development Shifts

      • SU checks after shutdown

        • went well
      • Polarization switching orbit bump for PolLux

        • elog
        • Tests show significant perturbation of machine optics including significant blow up of the vertical beam size that will be noticeable by other beamlines
        • Dynamic feed forward optics correction will be very challenging
        • Further investigations needed
      • Single Bunch Tests SuperXAS

        • Issue with broader peak in detector 120 instead of 20 ns from expected still present
        • Timing signal from EVR seems to be fine according to timing expert
        • From detector side also everything seems to be fine according to beamline expert
        • Analysis of event stream and detector data (photons and triggers) and investigation of distribution next step to understand issue, i.e., are photons or events or both fluctuating
  3. Requests

    • PolLux shift for testing single bunch

      • parasitically possible with bunch train
      • will be done and exchange with SuperXAS on the topic
    • Orbit bumps

      • startup next week with same bump settings as end of last year except SIM
  4. AOB

    • Beamline Info Panels

      • Please make sure every beamline expert knows how to open and fully understands the beamline info panel
        • e.g., caqtdm -noMsg -noMsg -attach -macro Beamline=X01DA /sls/op/config/qt/X_Info_Panel.ui
        • feedback: FOFB information and beam size would be useful on this panel
        • beamsize PVs from diagnostic beamlines:
          • X01DD-FE-CAM1:SIG-X
          • X01DD-FE-CAM1:SIG-Y
          • X08DB-FE-CAM1:SIG-X
          • X08DB-FE-CAM1:SIG-Y
    • Beamline Phone Numbers

      • Beamline overview including telephone at sls.psi.ch
        • please take the requirement of having a phone number for your hutch seriously
        • please send me an email with your phone number
    • Criticallity of vertical beam size blow up

      • Not really but smaller would be better
      • No specific threshold
      • Corresponding increase of divergence (the observed beam size blow up is an emittance blow up, i.e., beam size and divergence are increased) is more critical

      • The beamline orbit bump must only be changed in steps of 1 um or urad per second or slower
        • other wise the fast orbit feedback might fail
        • we need to gather some experience with user controlled bumps - it could be that additional machine protection measures have to be taken to ensure stable operation
      • Feedback
        • separate expert and user version of X_Info_Panel.ui would be nice
    • Top-Up Schemes

      • TOMCAT: shorter periodicity preferred, option 2 not required, scan duration anyhow longer than top-up periodicity and lost frames acceptable, depends heavily on how transparent the injection can be made
      • Debye: we see a signature of the injection (and pre-injection) on our data. Shorter periodicity would be rather detrimental. With the present injection scheme, Debye would be more wanting to push towards much less frequent top-up

      • X11MA would like to do some bump tests
    • X10DA/SuperXAS would like to do camshaft tests 3.12.

        • other wise the fast orbit feedback might fail
        • we need to gather some experience with user controlled bumps - it could be that additional machine protection measures have to be taken to ensure stable operation
    • Top-Up Schemes

      1. Lower and upper beam current thresholds defining top-up (e.g., adjusted for on average 3 min top-up periodicity)
        • top-up starting time defined by lifetime and current thresholds
        • top-up duration defined by injection efficiency and current thresholds
        • advantages: stable average beam current, stable average top-up duration
        • disadvantages: gating beamline measurement requires external trigger, i.e., EPICS or timing Event
      2. Fixed periodicity (e.g., 3 minutes) and upper beam current threshold defining top-up
        • top-up starting time predefined by desired periodicity
        • top-up duration defined by injection efficiency, current thresholds and lifetime
        • advantages: gating beamline measurement with local timer possible, i.e., time until next top-up fixed and known (useful for uninterruptible scanning measurements)
        • disadvantages: in rare cases significant fluctuations of beam current and top-up duration possible
      3. Bunch charge thresholds defining top-up
        • top-up starting time defined by lifetime and current thresholds of all individual bunches
        • top-up duration is 1 shot, i.e., 1/3 s
        • advantages: most stable average current
        • disadvantages: same as 1. and many individual top-ups (fine if transparent injection can be achieved)
      • Main Questions
        • preferred periodicity, i.e., how many minutes?
        • preferred top-up scheme?
        • comment: current change implies motion of sourcepoint (0.3 um/mA in both planes) giving stronger motivation for option 1
        • TOMCAT: shorter periodicity preferred, option 2 not required, scan duration anyhow longer than top-up periodicity and lost frames acceptable, depends heavily on how transparent the injection can be made
  3. Requests

    • PX-II bumps
