        • Timing Upgrade
        • Vacuum Issue
          • Meeting series on indico, last meeting: https://indico.psi.ch/event/18038/
          • Small aperture, 21 mm, 2m long copper vacuum chamber upstream of X11/UE36 was removed and replaced with 40 mm chamber with additional pumping intersection
          • Machine performance from loss / lifetime perspective now acceptable, i.e., > 9 hour lifetime
          • Beam size remains increased by factor ~2, indicating remaining vacuum issue
          • SU measurements and required vacuum (5e-7 mbar over 2 meter) to explain observed gas lifetime indicate remaining issue with UE36 in X11 which also implicates undesirable localization of gas scattering losses
        • Post Mortem Diagnostics Issue
          • Due to negative measured doses on ARS09-DDRM-1530 and ARS09-DDRM-3500 the RadFET based dose distribution table is meaningless at the moment
      • Incidents/Issues
        • Reminder: Operation of the machine is becoming the main priority
          • please make sure that fulfilling the operational requirements hast the appropriate priority on your side
          • reliability / documentation / operator panels / communication of changes / integration with ALH, Snapshot and so forth should get higher priority than further improving the performance and adding more features
        • Risky beam dump Nr. 6
          • https://elog-gfa.psi.ch/SLS/62451
          • https://elog-gfa.psi.ch/SLS+RF/2121
          • Happened during BPM Sector reboot
          • Beam dump controller only triggered by RF stations
          • Post mortem data clearly shows that beam was lost before dump kicker was fired
          • Communication issue between machine experts concerning disabling the orbit deviation beam dump seems irrelevant
          • It would be good if the disabling and reenabling of the orbit deviation beam dump for sector reboots could be automized in a safe way
        • Upcoming migration to gitea
          • the migration is scheduled for the end of November, i.e., right in the middle of the first real SLS 2.0 user operation
          • controls has announced one day of service interruption and warned that they will be completely busy preparing and performing migration until then
          • any gitlab CI/CD has to be manually rewritten in order to work with gitea
          • Changed repository naming, hierarchy, structure and AD integration to be taken into account
        • Console issue today
          • a significant fraction of the consoles in the control room spontaneously rebooted this morning around 6 thus stopping any local feedback loops and destroying any locally recorded data
          • the same is observed on many beamline consoles
      • Operation Schedule
        • Operation until October shutdown without further interventions following DUO schedule https://duo.psi.ch/duo/public_calendar.php
        • Machine development / scrubbung until 13:00 today
        • First light for SIM today from 13-17:00
        • First light for I-TOMCAT tomorrow and Friday from 8-17:00
        • Beamline development from today until October shutdown
        • Machine development next Tuesday and Tuesday until Friday morning the week after
    • Linac/LTB Optimization by {{Volker}}

      • LTB modelling with new magnets in preparation

        • elements behind linac not touched
        • only QA, QE and QB and coresponding beam pipes are changed
        • screen monitors stay
        • BPM behind QC exchanged
        • Statement from Boris: old stripline BPMs are fine --> only dispersive BPM updatet
      • schedule is tight
      • unclear if keeping LTB upgrade project separate or increase direct coordination with linac upgrade is preferred
        • coordination can only be expected on machine expert side
        • max is coordinating resources
        • should be increased
    • Storage Ring Optimization by {{Masamitsu}}

      • Optics corrected and confirmed after shutdown
      • Cycling procedure from controls / Uros now working fine including ID correctors
      • BRTL should not be cycled with stored beam
      • Monitoring magnet designed for no field on beam will be installed downstream of collimator for quantification of expected demagnetization. Here we expect ~10x higher losses. With periodic measurement of this magnet we can predict demagnetization of the other magnets.
      • recabling of 2 sextupoles for individual control planned for shutdown
    • RF by {{Lukas}}

      • Linac
        • Linac timing issue with gun triggered at half rate to be investigated
    • Pulsed Magnets by {{Martin}}

      • For the BD pulser - we have one new switch (already with the encapsulated thyristors we got them couple of days ago) that is ready for a replacement in case of problems.
      • By the way the initial tests show the encapsulated switches dont have this nasty leakage current behavior and work very well. We plan to replace all switched of the BD in the near future and hope this to solve the problem for good.
      • For thin septum we have a replacement switch in the reserve cabinet in our storage area (Sladana is aware) in case of failure.
      • No reserve replacements for all systems available yet
      • Installation and test of fast kicker in oCtober shutdown is prepared but collides with ID removal scenario, i.e., only one of the two can be done

      • added trim coil to k3 to simulate eddy currents in chamber metallization
        • disappointing result : transient remained on the same order as without trim coils
      • comment from Martin: despite many efforts never really found out root cause of observed transient,
        • only observed effect: increasing kick length reduced amplitude of disturbance suggesting this effect to be related to the derivative of the pulses, i.e., difference in metallization of chambers
        • especially the observed vertical oscillations are not well understood

      • (remarks from {{Michael}})
        • quite successful, obvious bugs were found and could be fixed in
        • the end
          • validity of inverted response matrices could be shown
          • normal orbit correction including dispersion exclusion from the orbit feedback to inhibit OFB correcting dispersive orbits was working very well, i.e., no accumulation of mean horizontal kick correction
          • dispersion correction via masterclock at much lower speed than corrector magnets
    • Robinson stability measurements at lower current (with streak-cam) by {{Lukas}} and {{Michael}}

      • A more detailed report is available on SLS RF ELOG
      • Previous measurements were done at 100mA. This time, the stored current was 40mA, where simulations predict two instability zones.
      • For measurements, we had a homogenous fill, without gap. The detuning of the Super-3HC was reduced until the beam was lost.
      • Findings:
        • It was possible to measure Dipole- and Quadropole Oscillations
        • The instability threshold was found around the expected detuning from Elegant simulation.
        • Looks like the instability appears near sextupole oscillation around detuning frequency of the Super-3HC.
        • Measured bunch length was near expected value, near instability, a smaller bunch length was measured.
    • Investigation Super-3HC Failure and Impedance of nearby Vacuum-components by {{Lukas}}

      • More detailed reports are available on the SLS RF ELOG: 1821 and 1822
      • In this shift, an attempt was made to investigate wake-field effects around the Super-3HC, by driving horizontal and vertical bumps at 400mA. The goal was to check, if the potential damage of the Super-3HC in March 2022 migth be related to excitation of transverse Higher Order Modes around the tapers, bellows, absorbers and pumps near the Super-3HC.
      • Findings:
        • No significant correlation of bump to temperatures, HOM-PU signals and 3HC Voltage was found.
        • Later, beginning of dark-time, the vacuum components in front and after the Super-3HC was inspected. It was found that an rf-finger was welded on at the bellow and bent and also some traces found on the absorber in front of the cavity. The absorber and taper will be inspected around January 2024.
        • The damage is most likely related to Synchrotron Light hitting on the rf-fingers and the absorbers.
        • The welded rf-finger caused a fix connection in the bellow and led to additional force and deformation of the Super-3HC cavities during thermal drifts and expansion of the Arc vacuum chamber.
    • Test on influence of ELM brake for servo motor on the stored beam with and without FOFB by {{Thomas}} and {{Marc}}

      • In short:
        • It was possible to condition the cavity up to 600kV, just before start of the dark-time. This would be sufficient for 3-cavity operation, at reduced current, in SLS2.
        • Unfortunately, break-down rate measurements were not possible because of the limited testing time.
        • Tests with more than 55kW input power were postponed to the next high power test slot, after April 2024.
        • Above 35kW, there were bright spots visible on the coupler camera (see below).
        • Many thanks for the great support from the control-room during the cavity conditioning period!

  1. Reports

    • Machine Operation

      • This year was the worst year in the history of SLS operation. With 92% it was worse than first year with 94 %. With 99.6% Availability in the last weeks without major outages. Beamlosses partly occured due to beamlines
    • Electron source pulser tests

      • second pulse from new board amended
      • pulse length shorter at lower charge ~100 pC
      • was in operation the last weeks
      • observed energy stability seems to have more jitter than old pulser --> diagnosed to be problem of modulator
      • board measured to feature jitter of ~12ps compared to old one with ~20ps
      • injection rate to booster rather low
    • Debye commissioning

      • measured entire night with -1.3 mm bump @ 85 mA
      • very useful for debugging beamline
      • photo of monochromatic photon beam at end of beamline
      • Problem with old frontend of IR beamline
      • mirror moved and probably tilted
      • large orbit bump and low current required to mitigate vacuum interlocks
      • party today
    • Beam size optimization

      • short unsatisfying shift
      • wrong file loaded in shift before
      • corrected in this shift --> got below 10 um
    • Test of new FOFB

      • bug identified (corrector matrix transposed accidentally)
      • seems to work well now
    • Linac radiation mapping

      • measured radiation dose, waiting for report
      • measured dose rates higher than old measurements with multibunch mode
      • measurements were performed at higher charge than required for operation
    • Single bunch measurements

      • results in RF elog
      • measured zero current bunch length seems to fit prediction within 1%
      • microwave instability confirmed at 3.4 mA somewhat smaller than model (4 mA) maybe due to missing impedance
    • ID and orbit

      • code to compensate for undulator gap change kick was tested
      • working code
      • output pdf in elog
      • local correction with 4 correctors
      • QT GUI not yet working on Bay 4
      • next time with only local correctors
      • took response matrix data 150 samples for machine learning model
    • X04SA-ID orbit optimization

      • Goal was to callibrate new SiC XBPMs in X04 and compare to existing frontend XBPMs at X04 and X11
      • beamline was operated during MD
      • shift time was short and current reduced for Debye SU measurements
      • X11 nobody was available to help
    • BPM tild measurement

      • last bpm rotation measurement long ago, lots of HW exchange since then
      • tilt error lets horizontal dispersion appear vertical, making vertical dispersion suppression difficult
      • shift was successful
    • Operator training

      • 5 participants, well recieved
      • explained LINAC setup including different bunchers SME and longitudinal loss monitors with persistent mode showing minimum, maximum, current and average loss
      • worked nicely
      • LLM give nice unique signature of current state of injection losses
      • good to identify drifts and problems early
      • more power in subharmonic prebuncher (SPB) would be good (stronger gradient enables shorter bunch which is good for further bunching and acceleration in 3 GHz structures)
      • idea is to give operators tools/cookbook to double check setup from RF group and correct for long term drifts

    • Communication Strategy and Plan for SLS 2.0

      • At the last SRDG meeting (https://indico.psi.ch/event/15040/) the new SLS 2.0 communication strategy was mentioned. Here some example tweets:

        ??? quote "SLS 2.0 related tweets posted by the official PSI twitter/X account @psich_en" Image1{ align=left } Image2{ align=left } Image3{ align=left } Image4{ align=left } Image5{ align=left } Image6{ align=left }

      • All those present at this meeting agree that it is not a good idea to rename the well known name "SLS 2.0" which stands for it being the successor to the existing SLS back to the name of its predecessor after commissioning.

    • End of SLS Party (PSD)

      • Monday, 25th September, 16:00 - 18:00
      • Place: tent at the SLS (when facing the SLS entrance, the tent is located on the left hand side)
      • Please register by Monday, 18th September 2023 in https://indico.psi.ch/e/SLS-party
