Advanced Installation
VMs provided by the PSI VMware infrastructure can use the normal network installation procedure. But for the usual local VM setups with host NAT this will not work as the VM needs direct access to the outside network for this. Alternatively you an bring everything required for the installation to your machine and then install it locally.
OS Installation Image
The necessary installation images in the form of ISO files can be downloaded for
or
RHEL=8.10
URL="http://repos.psi.ch/rhel${RHEL%%.*}/iso/rhel-${RHEL}-x86_64-dvd.iso"
curl --remote-name "$URL"
Kickstart Image
Also for the Kickstart file you can download a ISO image. But before you are able to do so the new host needs to be introduced to Sysdb, for the minimum you need the hostname and your Hiera environment:
FQDN=...
ENV=...
bob node add $FQDN $ENV local
bob node set-attr $FQDN puppet_role=role::base
With this ready you can download the kickstart ISO image:
FQDN=...
RHEL=8.10
URL="http://sysdb.psi.ch/kickstart/v1/config?fqdn=${FQDN}&instrepo=rhel-${RHEL}-x86_64-dvd&ks_template=rhel${RHEL%%.*}&format=iso"
curl --remote-header-name --remote-name "$URL"
Installation
- add two CD-ROM drives to the virtual hardware
- map the first CD-ROM drive to the OS ISO image
- map the second CD-ROM drive to the kickstart ISO image
- boot the VM into the OS ISO image
So far this was reported to work with VirtualBox, but it should also work for other hypervisors.
Feel free to provide us with guides or just screenshot sequences so we are able to extend this guide with more details how this is done on different hypervisors.
