Systemwide Custom Gnome Settings with dconf

Gnome configuration is backed by dconf.

Some Tooling

Dump all dconf Configuration

$ dconf dump /
[org/gnome/control-center]
last-panel='applications'

[org/gnome/desktop/input-sources]
sources=[('xkb', 'us'), ('xkb', 'de'), ('xkb', 'ch')]

[org/gnome/desktop/interface]
toolkit-accessibility=false

[org/gnome/desktop/peripherals/keyboard]
numlock-state=true
...
$

You may diff the dump before and after making changes in the GUI settings to see how they are persisted.

Delete the User Specific Settings

rm ~/.config/dconf/user

Check the Value for a Specific Setting

# gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.preferences default-folder-viewer
'list-view'
#

Configuration

dconf Values

In Hiera dconf settings can be configured with the gnome::dconf::settings key which contains a hash with the individual paths and therein the individual configurations:

gnome::dconf::settings:
  'org/gnome/nautilus/preferences':
    'default-folder-viewer': "'list-view'"
  'org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power':
    'idle-dim': false
    'power-saver-profile-on-low-battery': false
    'sleep-inactive-ac-timeout': 3600
    'sleep-inactive-ac-type': "'nothing'"
    'sleep-inactive-battery-type': "'nothing'"

Note that for string values it needs an apostrophe (') around which needs to survive YAML parsing. Best surround it with an additional set of ".
