Home Directory

The home directory can be locally on the machine or on AFS where the actual path is part of the AD user settings.

The Linux Team heavily suggest not using a home drive shared between different computers, be it AFS or NFS as certain software can get irritated if there is parallel access to their "local" data. A nice example is Firefox which at least behaves gracefully by showing an error message and refusing to start if it detects another system already already working with the profile.

Local homes are default starting with RHEL9 (there is no AFS support any more), before it depends if AFS is enabled and on the Puppet role.

You may control local homes in Hiera with:

base::local_homes: true

which then will use /home/$USER as home directory and creates it if missing.

Independent of this setting you may control the exact location of the home directory with

aaa::override_homedir: '/data/%u'

and control the automatic creation of the home directory upon first login with

aaa::create_homes: true
