# Hardware Compatibility Here are hardware tests with RHEL8 on standard PSI hardware documented. Generally speaking has Linux a rather good hardware compatibility with PC hardware, usually the older the hardware the better the support. ## Desktop Hardware ### HP EliteDesk 8 Mini G2i Desktop Next Gen AI PC - ❌ Installation ### HP Z2 Tower G1i Workstation Desktop PC - ✔ NIC - ✔ GPU - ✔ DP - ✔ USB - ✔ Audio ### HP EliteDesk 8 Mini G1i Desktop AI PC - ✔ NIC - ✔ GPU - ✔ HDMI - ❌ DP - ✔ USB - ✔ Audio - ❌ WLAN - ❌ Bluetooth ### HP Elite Mini 800 G9 Desktop PC - ✔ NIC - ✔ GPU - ✔ HDMI - ✔ DP - ✔ USB - ✔ Audio ### HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation Desktop PC - ✔ NIC - ✔ GPU - ✔ DP - ✔ USB - ✔ Audio ### HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 - ✔ NIC - ✔/(❌) GPU (did not recognise full wide-screen monitor form factor) - ✔ DP - ✔ USB ## Mobile Hardware ### HP ZBook X G2i 16 inch Mobile Workstation PC - ❌ Installation ### HP EliteBook 8 G2i 14 inch Notebook Next Gen AI PC - ❌ Installation ### HP ZBook X G1i 16 inch Mobile Workstation PC - ❌ Installation ### HP EliteBook 8 G1i 14 inch Notebook AI PC - ✔/(❌) Installation (no network installation) - ❌ Touchpad - ❌ WLAN - ✔ GPU - ❌ HDMI - ✔ USB - ❌ Audio - ✔ Webcam - ❌ Bluetooth - SIM slot (not tested) #### Installation Network installation did not work, the BIOS could not use/activate USB network interfaces (tested two dongles and a in-monitor dockingstation). Installation worked with following procedure: - prepare kickstart file as `ks.cfg` on an USB-drive labelled `OEMDRV` - boot from USB stick, note that the BIOS only manages one USB stick, so do connect the `OEMDRV` stick only after the boot menu from the real boot stick has been loaded - have the device connected with an USB dongle; it does not activate it automatically, so if Anaconda starts immediately switch to the console with \ and look up the interface name with `nmcli` and then activate it with `nmcli dev connect $INTERFACE_NAME` #### Hardware related errors WLAN: ``` kernel: iwlwifi: No config found for PCI dev 7740/00e4, rev=0x460, rfid=0x20112200 kernel: iwlwifi: probe of 0000:00:14.3 failed with error -22 ``` ### HP EliteBook 840 14 inch G11 Notebook PC - ❌ WLAN (firmware missing) - ✔ GPU - ❌ HDMI - ✔ USB - ❌ Audio - ✔ Webcam - ❌ Bluetooth - SIM slot (not tested) ### HP ZBook Studio 16 inch G11 Mobile Workstation PC - ✔ NIC (HP USB-C to RJ45 Adapter G2) - ✔ WLAN - ❌/✔ GPU - ✔ USB - ❌ Monitor via USB C - ✔ Audio - ✔ Webcam - ❌ Bluetooth - SIM slot (not tested) - fingerprint scanner (not tested) #### Installation The device has two GPUs, an Intel and an Nvidia: ``` # lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Meteor Lake-P [Intel Arc Graphics] (rev 08) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 28b9 (rev a1) # ``` With the propretary Nvidia driver this does not work, but with the open source Nouveau driver it is fine, except that it cannot handle more than the primary monitor. To enable the Nouveau driver put `nvidia::driver::enable: false` in Hiera, run as root `puppet agent -t` and remove all Nvidia related driver packages, then reboot. ### HP EliteBook 840 14 inch G10 Notebook PC - ✔ WLAN - ✔ GPU - ✔ HDMI - ✔ USB - ✔ Audio - ✔ Webcam - ✔ Bluetooth - SIM slot (not tested) - Card reader (not tested) ### HP ZBook Studio 16 inch G10 Mobile Workstation PC - ❌/✔ Installation only with extra steps - ✔ NIC (HP USB-C to RJ45 Adapter G2) - ✔ WLAN - ✔ GPU - ✔ USB - ❌/✔ Audio (manual firmware binary install from https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/ required), microphone and ear plugs work, but not the speaker - ✔ Webcam - ✔ Bluetooth - SIM slot (not tested) - fingerprint scanner (not tested) #### Installation - Nouveau driver fails on the Nvidia chip, so modesetting needs to be disabled: ``` bob node set-attr pcXYZ.psi.ch "kernel_cmdline=nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0" ``` - Register the system "Pass Through" MAC address (you find it in the BIOS). - Installation did not work with the "HP USB-C to RJ45 Adapter G2": use another, registered adapter or dock instead. ## Test Details - network card by installation via network - GPU by running graphical desktop, for Nvidia GPUs check if Nvidia drivers are used - HDMI - DP - USB by mouse, keyboard - notebook: - touchpad - wifi - bluetooth (headset working?) - microphone - speaker - webcam - Dock - network - USB by mouse, keyboard - HDMI
