# Gnome Extensions Various extensions allow to extend the Gnome Desktop functionality. ## Installing a Extension The systemwide installation directory for extensions is `/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/`, but they can also be installed for just a single user in `~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/`. Gnome extensions can be installed as software package, via browser and the [Gnome Extensions Website](https://extensions.gnome.org/) or manually. ## Configure an Extension for all Users In Hiera add the identifier/technical name of the desired extension to the `gnome::custom_extensions` list: ``` gnome::custom_extensions: - 'desktop-icons@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com' ``` You can figure out the technical name by listing the installation directory (see above chapter) or by checking the list of activated extensions before and after enabling it using the GUI settings tool (`Tweaks` on RHEL8 and `Extensions` or RHEL9+): ``` $ dconf dump /org/gnome/shell/ | grep enabled-extensions enabled-extensions=['appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com', 'desktop-icons@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com'] $ ``` For the actual configuration of the extension itself, best do it with the GUI tool and then list the configuration of all extensions as follows: ``` $ dconf dump /org/gnome/shell/extensions/ [dash-to-dock] show-trash=false dock-fixed=true dock-position='BOTTOM' $ ``` or watch the changes live with ``` $ dconf watch /org/gnome/shell/extensions/ /org/gnome/shell/extensions/desktop-icons/show-trash false /org/gnome/shell/extensions/desktop-icons/show-home false ``` and then bring your changes into your default [dconf configuration](dconf). Note that users may still override such configuration. To reset user specific settings do ``` rm ~/.config/dconf/user ```
