No photon makes a count negative and a reflection only adds counts, so a pixel reading below
-(10 x the Poisson noise of its ring's level + 10 photons) on at least a twentieth of the pre-scan frames
(and on two) is defective, whatever it reads in between. A column of a JUNGFRAU 9M swung between
-2500 and +1000 counts from frame to frame with a normal median: its negative frames dragged the
background ring of every reflection near it far below zero, a disk summing to nothing was then integrated
huge with a one-photon sigma, and on 1500 frames of a jet run such observations zeroed the 3.4-4.9 A shell
(CCref there 0.30 -> 0.35, overall 0.12 -> 0.55 with the column masked). The rule sits beside the dead one,
on the host and the device alike; real reflections cannot trigger it. On rotation and serial sets from
EIGER, JUNGFRAU 4M and 16M detectors it masks nothing and the merges are bit-identical.
