## Outcome
Two keynote presentations were given by [Elke Zimoch](https://www.linkedin.com/in/elke-zimoch-054b11127/) on ["Cybersecurity: Humans in Cyberphysical Systems"](_media/20250715_CyberphysicalSystems.pdf) and by [Michael Weinold](https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelweinold/) on "My RSE@PSI Journey: From Scripts to Software".
Survey to be shared with directorate.
After a thorough brainstorming session, the participants discussed various ideas and proposals to enhance the RSE community at PSI. The event concluded with a networking session, allowing participants to connect and share their experiences. Of the many ideas, the following were highlighted as particularly promising:
| Idea | Utility | Effort |
| ---- | ------- | ------ |
| **RSE@PSI Survey** | Gather feedback and ideas from the RSE community to show to management. | 🟡 |
| **Hackathon** | Foster collaboration, innovation, and community building across different PSI groups. | 🔴 |
| **Website of Software Tools developed at PSI** | Showcase PSI's software development capabilities and promote best practices. | 🟢 |
| **RSE Introduction for new PSI Staff** | Provide new staff with essential knowledge about RSE practices and tools at PSI. | 🟢 |
## Brainstorming Results
The brainstorming session was a key part of the event, where participants shared their ideas and expectations for the RSE community at PSI. The following sections summarize the main themes and proposals that emerged from the discussions:
### Open Brainstorming
- **Mentorship** and contact persons from the RSE community
- P**rofessionalize software development** concepts at PSI
### Proposals for Specific Interest Groups
- **Python** programming (_getting started, best practices, promote use within institute_)
- **Julia** programming (_getting started, best practices, promote use within institute_)
- **Technical documentation** (_best practices, tools, examples_)
- **AI and ML** in programming (_best practices, tools, knowledge sharing_)
- **High-performance computing**
- **Web development**
- Programming tools for **data analysis**
- **Version control systems**
Group,Topic,Key Ideas
Example,Group Setup Example,"Demonstrates how to add links, notes, images, comments, emojis, and symbols to groups. Includes an example of a whiteboard photo with formulas."
#1,Open Brainstorming,"Open-ended ideas; includes a ""group goal"" note and a photo of a whiteboard with mathematical content. Offers exclusive content, free trials; leverage social media, create engaging marketing, utilize email marketing."
#2,Interest in Special Group Programming Languages and Setup,"Focus on specific languages: Python (share syntax using examples), Fortran, C/C++ (share best practices), Matlab (formerly common, now less), Julia. Also, coding events (need organizer), fundamental coding concepts."
#3,Proposals for Specific Interest Groups,"- Group for Julia programming: getting started, best practices, promote use within institute.
- Group for program documentation and sharing.
- Group for AI in programming and ML knowledge sharing.
- Group for high-performance computing (HPC).
- Group for web development.
- Group for programming tools for data analysis.
- Group for version control systems like Git.
- Note on confidence in programming for non-coders."
### How to Increase Visibility and Outreach
Capitalize on current momentum; types of events (workshops, seminars, hackathons).
- Create content (blogs, videos, podcasts) with member involvement.
- Use social media (LinkedIn, X, Instagram) for updates and engagement.
- Develop a website or newsletter.
- Collaborate with schools/universities for student involvement.
- Host events like coffee chats or webinars.
- Partner with similar groups, invite speakers.
- Understanding group goal and potential is key to outreach."
#5,High-Level 2-5 Year Vision for the Group,"- Interactions via PSI Day, advertised through the institute.
- Communicate via PSI channels; develop and make apps visible (e.g., GUI programming).
- Larger, reviewed code base with common good practices.
- Code reviews, suggestions.
- Perhaps a game plan or strategy.
- Interactions might begin with lunches.
- Formal training traversing the day; it could be advertised."
- **Institutionalize the RSE community** (_create a formal structure, including regular meetings_)
- **Involve (line) management** (_get support to promote/involve staff in RSE practices and tools_)
- **Partner with other RSE groups** in the ETH Domain (_invite speakers, collaborate on events_)
- **Large-scale events** (_hackathons, group code-review, conferences_)
### What Do You Expect from the Community and How to Get There?
"Expectations: Knowledge sharing, networking, best practices, collaboration, training, support, events, fun, mentoring, resources, inspiration, problem-solving, career development, innovation, recognition.
How: Through shared activities, discussions, and community building (visualized as a mind map with connections)."
#7,What Do You Expect from the Community and How to Get There?,"Expectations: Push best practices, build a community, help improve the situation at PSI.
How: Hackathons, documentation, events/talks/courses?"
#8,What Do You Expect from the Community and How to Get There?,"Expectations: Formal training for students/postdocs on software; places/people for advice on software problems (including PSI-supported solutions); chat tools (Teams/Slack/Discord) with organization; unified documentation; industrial best practices recognized at PSI; allocate time to learn these things (not outsourced); good software practices; advertise job openings openly to draw external talent.
How: Through implementation of these structures and practices."
| Expectation | Solution |
| ----------- | -------- |
| **Push best practices** in software development | _Hackathons, documentation, events/talks/courses..._ |
| **Community building** | _Regular meetings, online platforms for discussion, high-level events..._ |
| **Formal training** for students/postdocs on software | _Mentorship programs, workshops, online courses..._ |
| **Get recognition for RSE work** | _Showcase projects, highlight contributions in PSI publications, awards..._ |
